Keep Ya Head Up

Do you have text neck? It’s a term created by a chiropractor in Florida that describes how many people are experiencing chronic neck pain due to the position of the head while reading texts. Smartphones have made body mechanics of most users more stupid in how the head is held when using these devices. Next time you are out and about, notice how many heads are bowed. I see it everywhere and we aren’t only talking about smartphone usage, but anything that is below eye level: reading books, tablets, ipads, laptops, etc.

During a bodywork session, I feel the tension and stiffness created by this in my clients. Prolonging the position of the head downward creates strain in the neck muscles, leading to extreme neck tension. I suggest to my clients to try and bring your arms up to meet your eyes instead of bringing your head down to meet the device in your hand. Another suggestion is to go hands free and put the device in a place where lowering your head is not necessary.

Like the late hip hop artist Tupac Shakur said in one of his many hit songs…Keep Ya Head Up.

This is a great post! You know, I'm sure my head drops so slowly that I don't even notice it, however, because of this blog I am going to be more mindful of how I'm holding my neck while texting!
