Keep Ya Head Up

Posted on July 29th, 2013 by Shari´ Parks

Do you have text neck? It’s a term created by a chiropractor in Florida that describes how many people are experiencing chronic neck pain due to the position of the head while reading texts. Smartphones have made body mechanics of most users more stupid in how the head is held when using these devices. Next time you are out and about, notice how many heads are bowed. I see it everywhere and we aren’t only talking about smartphone usage, but anything that is below eye level: reading books, tablets, ipads, laptops, etc.

During a bodywork session, I feel the tension and stiffness created by this in my clients. Prolonging the position of the head downward creates strain in the neck muscles, leading to extreme neck tension. I suggest to my clients to try and bring your arms up to meet your eyes instead of bringing your head down to meet the device in your hand. Another suggestion is to go hands free and put the device in a place where lowering your head is not necessary.

Like the late hip hop artist Tupac Shakur said in one of his many hit songs…Keep Ya Head Up.

Check out my interview in the Sun!!!

Posted on July 28th, 2013 by Aaduri Healing Arts

So, last week the director of the Massage Therapy department at CCBC emailed me to see if I would be willing to do this quick interview. Sure, why not??  So I submit my answers, thinking that it is just going to a small CCBC newsletter.  Then first thing this morning I get a phone call from my parents that I am in the Baltimore Sun!  Modeling is definitely not my strong suit 🙂

Hope you all enjoy this brief summary of why I became a Massage Therapist and why I LOVE it!!

Energy healing

Posted on July 12th, 2013 by Shari´ Parks

What is energy work? It consists of hands-on and hands off modalities of interaction between energy fields and your body. Examples of hands on modalities are Therapeutic Touch and Reiki. Some hands off modalities would be yoga, qi gong and t’ai chi. More spiritual oriented practices are meditation, chakra excercises and chanting which helps you shift into deep relaxation, essentially an altered state of consciousness.

As a Massage Therapist, I see and feel the significance of energy in my personal and professional life. My journey to energy appreciation started with yoga over 15yrs ago. Next, I decided to delve into learning how to use myself as a conduit by becoming Reiki 1 certified. More recently I attended a Qi Gong conference. We all are energy beings. I invite you to consciously notice your own energy flow and exchange with those around you. You’ll be amazed by what you may find.

Welcome July. This is the best time to catch up on some leisure reading. My preferred reading environment would be poolside or at the beach.

Wherever you are spending the dog days of summer, be sure to stay hydrated.

Below is the link to Body Sense Magazine Summer edition e-newsletter for your reading pleasure. Learn how some yoga poses can cause instant relaxation. Or how about your eyes could be the cause of muscle tension.

Check it out. Happy Summer.
