Flip flops, friend or foe?

Posted on May 29th, 2012 by Shari´ Parks
Happy Memorial Day!

I spent the long weekend visiting one of my younger sisters in NY. You can imagine we did alot of walking in the heart of Manhattan, and with the warm weather this brought the summer footwear. I couldn’t help but notice the alarming number of tourist wearing, yeap you guess it. Flip flops. We all love them. Our toes get some much needed sun and freedom from the restrictive space they have endured all winter and spring, and many believe them to be comfortable.

I’m all for wearing them. I’m the first to enjoy allowing my toes to ‘breathe’, but flip flops are the worse shoes to walk in for long periods of time. Beach and poolside are the only reasons flip flops should be worn, but for many they have made it to being the shoe of choice the entire Summer.

Bottom line they do not allow any arch support. You can bend them in half, you have to squeeze your big toe and second toe together to just keep them on and lastly offer no protection from other earthly things you may come across on your path like glass, bacteria infested puddles and thawing dog poop.

As a Licensed Massage Therapist, I see the damage flip flops can cause to the joints because  it alters the gait of the wearer. Also anyone with diabetes or circulation issues should avoid wearing them all together because symptoms can cause a lack of sensation to the feet. Podiatrists say  people with knee, hip, or back problems also should avoid wearing flop flops because they aggravate injuries.

So, bottom line folks….don’t wear flip flops unless you are wearing them for shorts amount of time.

Happy Summer!

Back pain ohhhh my!!

Posted on May 19th, 2012 by Shari´ Parks

As a massage therapist I see the popularity and credibility of bodywork now a commonplace for those who suffer from back pain.

There is no denying the positive effects massage can have on the body. Most massage therapists use a variety of techniques during a session, such as energy techniques and stretching, along with traditional massage.

The Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami has coordinated more than 100 studies that document the therapeutic effects of massage. One study on massage and back pain found that massage decreased while also improving sleep and range of motion for most joints.

Geriatric Massage

Posted on May 18th, 2012 by Shari´ Parks

Earlier in the week I spent four hours providing chair massage to geriatric clients at a senior living center. The time spent with these wise citizens prompted me to write this blog.

First lets define geriatric massage. It’s a form of massage developed for use on the elderly, hence the term ‘geriatric’. This population needs a different type of massage therapy and many factors must be considered prior to providing bodywork.

Two main factors are their increased fragility and sensitivity to touch.  Deep tissue massage, a widely know modality, is not suitable for the elderly population because it can cause bruising and pain.  Another thing to consider is that the elderly body tends to experience more stiffness and joint problems.

This knowledge is critical. So before you purchase massage therapy service for your senior  be sure to know that the therapist has experience.

Reflexology is good stuff!!

Posted on May 11th, 2012 by Shari´ Parks

Alot of people underestimate or just aren’t aware of all the benefits of reflexology. As one of the more gentle massage modalities, it’s the practice of manipulating reflex areas in the feet and hands. These reflex areas correspond to specific body parts and organs.

Since the hands and feet set the tone for the rest of the body, it’s one of the best treatments in reducing stress.

It also:
* Helps the body rid itself of toxins
* Increases circulation of blood and lymph fluids
* Improves nerve supply
* Serves as preventive health care
* Efficiently address ALL the systems of the body
* Gives us simple, yet powerful techniques that anyone can learn and use

Give reflexology a try…you have nothing to lose.

Are you practicing this today?

I’m providing chair massages this week to various school teachers and one high school had this phrase posted on a bulletin board.

Nice reminder to live life with this message in mind, wouldn’t you say?
